Spina Bifida is the most common permanently disabling birth defect in the world.  It affect an estimated 1 in eery 1,500 births in the United States.  It is a life long disability and is known as a "Snowflake" disability because no two cases are the same.  There is no cure for Spina Bifida and no known cause.  It is estimated that there are currently over 166,000 people in the United States living with Spina Bifida.

Babies born with Spina Bifida which means "Split Spine" must undergo surgical intervention within 48hrs of their birth to correct the birth defect.  The degree of disability depends on where the "split" occured on their spine during gestation.
