Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease, is a disease of the motor neurons, the nerve cells that control voluntary muscle movement. For unknown reasons, motor neurons die, and the muscles they control become weak and then non-functional. Death, usually from respiratory complications, typically occurs between 3 and 5 years after diagnosis. However, about 10% of people with ALS live more than 10 years, and some survive for decades

Since MDA's inception in the early 1950s, they have dedicated more than $290 million to ALS research, services and information programs. Established in 1985, the ALS Association has committed more than $67 million to find effective treatments and a cure for Lou Gehrig's Disease. New techniques and products are continually emerging that make it increasingly possible for people with ALS to adapt to the disease, to pursue their interests, and to continue to live rich and rewarding lives.
