AUCTION ITEM #2

VALUE (PRICELESS)

Auction Description for Flight with Roger Hadfield

The Man

Described by the organization ”Vintage Wings” as the patriarch of “Canada’s First Family of Flight”, Roger Hadfield has spent a lifetime both flying and inspiring others to do so.  He has flown a vast array of aircraft from his Belgian Stampe (a WWII trainer biplane), to DC-8s.

Rogers’s early career included instructing, flying survey missions over South America in a B-17, flying executives for Dow Chemical, helping start (and flying for) what would become Great Lakes Airlines at what is now Chris Hadfield airport, and then joining Air Canada.  When he retired in 1994, they retired the DC-8 at the same time.

Roger has also flown recreationally his whole life.  He began flying aerobatics in the 70’s, joined Aerobatics Canada where he competed and won many awards.  He was the manager of the team when they went to Oshkosh for the World Aerobatic Championships in 1980.

Roger and his wife, Eleanor, have 5 children – 3 boys who fly, and 2 daughters who prefer to ride in the back.  2 daughters-in-law, many friends of their children, as well as 1 grandson have become pilots.  Roger has always been happy to introduce others to flying, and takes this responsibility very seriously.  It was on his lap that his son, Astronaut Chris Hadfield, first took the stick and felt what it was to fly.  Flying is a joy, and Roger loves nothing better than sharing it with others.

The Auction Item

The winning bidder will meet Roger at an airport and time to be determined (based on schedules and weather) where they will be taken for a flight in Roger’s personal Cessna 170 .  The Cessna seats 3 passengers (1 in front, 2 in back), so the auction is actually for a 30 minute (or possibly longer) flight for 3 over southern Ontario with the father of Commander Chris Hadfield.  A particularly generous winning bid may receive a signed copy of Chris’ book as well.  ;)
