Chips for Kip: Salem Country Club   |   Monday October 07, 2024

About

Kip began his career as course superintendent at the Championship Course Three at Medinah Country Club. In 1981, he took the job of Superintendent at Salem Country Club in Peabody, MA to prepare the course for the 1984 USGA Women's Open. During his 38 years at Salem, the club went on to host two U.S. Senior Opens, in 2001 and 2017. He became a Certified Golf Course Superintendent, and was a member of the Golf Course Superintendents Association of America for 44 years. He received the Superintendent of the Year award in 2001 from Golf Week's SuperintendentNEWS.

One of the North Shore’s most accomplished golf course superintendents in modern times (1982-2019) with 38 years worth of service at Salem Country Club. Equally significant, he is one of only two course superintendents in New England to have hosted three United States Golf Association championships spanning the last 40 years (1984 U.S. Women’s Open, 2001 and 2017 U.S. Senior Opens). The other is Bill Spence, who hosted three events at The Country Club (1988 U.S. Open, 1995 U.S. Women’s Amateur, 2013 U.S. Men’s Amateur).

An Ohio State alumnus, Tyler had come to Salem from famed Medinah outside Chicago, where its No. 3 course, of which Kip was in charge, has hosted numerous major championships. A diehard Ohio State Buckeye fan, he never missed watching a football game and most every basketball game.

After a long and courageous struggle with a glioblastoma, a terminal brain cancer, Kip passed away July 24th, 2022. In his honor, we want to remember his legacy on the golf course and raise money to support continued research on this aggressive terminal cancer.
