SO HOW DID IT ALL START?

The inception of CommunityOutreachYEG was started many years ago by Melody and Floyd House from their home. Floyd and Mel would often see the homeless community, in the city and it broke their hearts to see those who found themselves living on the streets. They made a commitment to each other that they were going to do whatever it takes to improve the lives of those who are homeless.

Over the years they have gradually gathered a trusted group of volunteers that want to make a real difference to their community and are willing to finance, work and hand out food and care packages at sometimes -35 degree weather conditions to support those in need!

They provide a healthy meal which they organize outside Hope City, downtown Edmonton to feed the homeless. Melody and Floyd rely on volunteers and support from the community and local businesses to donate in any way they can. From financial assistance to food, blankets, gloves, clothing, jackets, toques and gloves to get through the winters.

In their own words “We want to make a real difference in people's lives, right now, providing essential needs to the less fortunate community. We are committed to providing accessible, inclusive, and culturally competent services to diverse communities”.

We want to assist people in the Greater Edmonton Area who are struggling to meet their essential needs. We focus our energies on the poor, homeless and those at risk of becoming homeless, by filling the gaps left by other programs and organizations. We do this by addressing their unmet essential needs of food, clothing, shelter and assisting them in accessing available services.

What We Do.

We currently work with a few other organizations in their causes in and around the Greater Edmonton Region.

  • SMILE- Edmonton
  • House of Refuge
  • Crazy Indians Brotherhood
  • Saving the Hungry

We work with existing organizations in filling the gap that is often missed or not in their budgets.

  • Mustard Seed
  • Hope Mission
  • Boyle Street Co-op
  • Bissell Centre
  • House of Refuge

CARGO TRUCK

I know cash is king and typically company assets go to auction, however, if your company is in a position where this is just an unneeded asset or just plain in your way, I was wondering if you would consider donating it to Community Outreach YEG?

We are a group of volunteers who collect and deliver everything from food to furniture for families in need through the Greater Edmonton area.

With the many programs we offer trucks have been in big demand, in the past, we have relied on personal pickups to rental vehicles to be able to facilitate picking up the items and then providing delivery as mentioned many of our clients do not even own vehicles, so we try and provide this service the best we can. Therefore for 2021, our goal is to have an organization donate us a vehicle while we fundraise to ensure we can take over all expenses of operating it. (insurance, fuel, maintenance, etc.)

We are also looking to provide an opportunity for businesses to advertise on the side of the truck. How does this work, well I am glad you asked for $5,000.00/ yr?… You will have your logo prominently displayed on the side or rear of the truck as one of our sponsors. We will have a limited number each year available pending the size of truck we receive. We are hoping to keep signage to approx… 24” x 36”, However, the company or individual who donates the vehicle will have a much larger sign with a notice indicating “Donated by” above their logo.

We are not going to be specific on the type of truck other than a 1 ton or larger, it can be a Van (preferably tall roof), cube van, 3- Ton, or 5-Ton truck.

WORK GEAR

Community Outreach YEG has decided to adopt a program being provided in Vancouver by Working Gear, which is to relieve poverty by providing interview clothing and industry-appropriate clothing and gear to low-income or unemployed individuals in search of employment.

Many of our clients have been unemployed for long periods and cannot afford the clothing needed to find a job. Many have difficulty accessing paid employment because they lack appropriate attire. Our goal is to reduce or eliminate this barrier to unemployment.

We do this by providing free good quality used or new clothing and gear, from construction clothing and steel-toed boots to business casual attire and suits. We through community agencies assisting the unemployed as to not duplicate but enhance services already being provided. We know from working the streets that there is a major shortage of actual workwear for construction and with the rising costs of work boots and other PPE we are focused on finding a solution vis partner to fill this gap. (Currently working with local safety supplier to secure resources directly from Manufacturers). We are open to companies participating by canvassing their employees for gently used workwear including suits/ dresses.
