Boys State and Girls State are summer leadership and citzenship programs sponosred by The American Legion. The Boys and Girls State Programs attract exemplary young people nominated by their high school during their junior year. Those selected are exposed to the rights and privileges, and the duties and the responsibilities of a franchised citizen. The training is objective and practical. Program participants are divided into subgroups referred to as cities. The citizens of each of these cities elect mock municipal and county officials, and representatives to the mock state legislature. Participants also elect state officials, such as governor, lieutenant governor, and other state-level officials mirroring the Texas Legislature. This mock legislature meets to organize, elect leaders, and to pass bills, in a way consistent with how our legislisture operates. Participants return from their week of immersion with an appreciation for democracy, government, and the legislative process. Boys and Girls State has been a program of The Americal Legion since 1937
