Giving Underprivileged Children in Ottawa a Better Shot at Life
The Rotary Club of West Ottawa allocates all proceeds from this golf tournament to worthwhile charities in the Ottawa area. Some of those programs include:
Dictionary 4 Life - This Rotary-supported program delivers illustrative dictionaries to primary-school children to promote literacy and learning. The dictionaries are comprised of over 1,000 illustrations, 10,000 entries, and 20,000 definitions printed in full-colour. By using dictionaries efficiently children explore spellings, meanings and derivations for example by using alphabetical order, abbreviations and definitions with understanding. One of the most positive aspects of being able to use a dictionary is that it helps to develop autonomy and confidence in the learner — one of the core goals of education. It promotes books and the printed word. It will be a “possession” for the child. It will enable both first and second language users to extend and improve the accuracy of their vocabulary. It should help children with their homework in secondary education. In some homes it may also form a reference work for all the family.
Christie Lake Kids - They enrich the lives and prospects of economically disadvantaged children, by providing quality year-round community and camp programs to develop physical, artistic, and social skills, positive attitudes and personal qualities. Christie Lake Kids focuses on building skills as a pathway to enhancing protective factors in children and youth. By incorporating elements of a strength-based approach to healthy development. Their programs demonstrate that learning new skills contributes to building developmental assets.
Trips for Kids Ottawa - Trips for Kids Ottawa's mission is to enrich the lives of economically disadvantaged, new-to-Canada youth, through outdoor activities to develop physical skills, gain environmental knowledge, form positive relationships and provide leadership opportunities. Promoting interest in mountain biking, outdoor activities and recreation; Fostering learning experiences and lessons in personal responsibility focusing on leadership, health and wellness, self-esteem, environmental awareness, and community involvement; and providing outdoor activities for those kids who would not otherwise have the opportunity
Easter Seals Camps: Merrywood Camp - Camp holds a multitude of physical and emotional benefits including the development of social skills, independence, self-esteem and confidence. For a child with a physical disability, improvement of these developmental traits is imperative to their growth. A summer camp experience allows a child to discover new physical capabilities while making friends, trying new activities, and navigating a world designed for their special needs. Camp Merrywood is located on a beautiful peninsula in Ridea Lake. On 30 acres of land between Smith Falls and Perth, the camp has a staff of 70 including 4 registered nurses and 2 healthcare assistants.
