The Cause

The Meg Polson Golf Classic is proud to support Muscular Dystrophy Canada!

Meg has been an active fundraiser for MDC for the past 8 years and is proud to host this tournament to raise money for a great cause!

Muscular Dystrophy Canada provides Programs and Services, Research and Advocacy to support people affected by neuromuscular disorders. Neuromuscular disorders are defined as health conditions that are caused by spelling changes in the genetic code (mutations) or changes in the autoimmune system that in turn impact muscles and/or the nerves that connect to muscles. Muscular dystrophies are a group of disorders and are one type of neuromuscular disorder. Other types of neuromuscular disorders also under MDC’s umbrella include myopathies, neuromuscular junction disorders, peripheral neuropathies and lower motor neuron disorders.

Remembering Garrett Cumming
February 26, 1986 - March 5, 2021

Garrett "G-Man" Cumming made an impact on all of those who had the opportunity to meet and get to know him. His family describes him as a goofy kid, a witty millennial, and a thoughtful old soul all rolled into one.

Garrett lived his life with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy. This required the use of a wheelchair at age 10, a breathing tube at age 20, and many surgeries and procedures throughout his 35 years. While his diagnosis was not lost on him, he never allowed it to define him. Knowing that he didn't have the luxury of time, he earned 2 degrees - a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a Master of Arts in Global Security. He travelled to multiple Canadian provinces, American states and European countries; watched every action movie made; caught every Oilers game he could and spent treasured time with family and friends.

Mike Nicholson, Past Chair of MDC National Fire Fighters Relations Committee remembers Garrett fondly:

“I remember after one of the camp outs, The Cumming’s family invited myself and others to their home to celebrate and I got to see the true brilliant, goofy, relaxed Garrett. He was in his element engaging with his siblings, extended family, friends, and care providers. We had the chance to chat about many things, his studies and desire to travel as well as my side hustle of being an on ice paramedic for the Oilers (our favourite NHL team), my family and love of Flyfishing.

What I got from this encounter and a few other ones with Garrett, was despite the daily challenges he faced living with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy he wouldn’t let it define or limit him. He maximized every moment, every experience or challenge that he faced with fearless abandon and a unique wit.”
