IN THE WORDS OF MEGAN PEGRAM, JACKSON'S MOM:
“I never, ever imagined we would face cancer. Especially not childhood cancer.
Jack was scheduled for a routine wellness visit. I mentioned that Jackson's stomach always seems so large and distended (like I have many other times). She said he was growing beautifully but would check just to ease our minds. She felt around on his stomach and said that something didn't feel "normal". There was a hard spot on the left side of his abdomen. She thought possibly an enlarged spleen, maybe an infection. We were sent straight to Duke Emergency Department.
They confirmed what they anticipated with a CT scan, which also showed that his entire left kidney was encapsulated (this is a good thing because it means that it was unlikely to have already spread). He had surgery to remove his entire left kidney and the remaining tumor, along with three lymph nodes. I will never forget the look on his precious little face or the way he cried mama as I was forced to leave him for surgery. That was the longest 6 hours of our life. Just waiting and praying and waiting more to hear that our baby made it out alive and with no other complications.
On a good note it hasn't spread to his lungs or any other major organs. However it does mean that along with 6-7 months of chemo he will need some radiation too. They have ensured us that out of all childhood cancers this is one of the most treatable. With a 90% survival rate."
The intention is to help absorb costs the family will incur for the long term medical treatments.
