Join us for a fun day of golf at the beautiful and prestigious El Macero Country Club, followed by hors d'oeuvres and award ceremony.  Your generous contributions will benefit the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Stephen McVey, CGCS, (1965-2018) was well known amongst the golf industry throughout Califonia. He began his superintendent career at Upland Hills Country Club while still in college at Cal Poly Pomona. From there he went onto Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, and then Virginia Country Club in Long Beach.  Moving his family to northern Calfiornia, Stephen took his next position at Morgan Creek Golf Course in Roseville. It was while he was the superintendent at Darkhorse Golf Course in Auburn, that he got the offer to go show his grass growing talent at his final position at the beautiful El Macero Country Club in Davis.

Everyone who got to know Stephen, were struck by his knowledge and the efforts he made to improve and enhance each and every course he had the pleasure of working.  He took his job seriously yet always found the time to answer questions and provide valuable input. His quick wit and sense of humor followed by his unmistakable laugh will always be remembered.

Stephen was diagnosed at the very early age of seven with Type 1 diabetes. He began taking insulin shots and routinely checking his blood sugar from that day forward.

Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease that strikes both children and adults suddenly. It has nothing to do with diet or lifestyle. There is nothing you can do to prevent it. And, at present, there is no cure. In T1D, your pancreas stops producing insulin—a hormone the body needs to get energy from food.

However, insulin is not a cure for diabetes. Even with the most vigilant disease management, a significant portion of the day will be spent with either high or low blood-sugar levels. These fluctuations place people with T1D at risk for potentially life-threatening hypoglycemic and hyperglycemic episodes as well as devastating long-term complications such as kidney failure, heart attack, stroke, blindness and amputation.

This golf tournament will help to raise funds for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation by funding research, advocating for government support of research and new therapies, ensuring new therapies come to market and connecting and engaging the T1D community.
