The Path to National Level Wrestling and Team Maryland Excellence

Training and competing with Team Maryland in the Freestyle and Greco Roman styles is one of the most important steps a wrestler can take in their development. Opportunities like the USA Wrestling National Duals in 14U, 16U, Junior, and Women’s divisions, along with Kids Nationals, US Marine Corps Junior Nationals Fargo, and the Women's National Championships, give athletes the chance to compete on the biggest stages in the country while becoming more complete wrestlers

Fargo is the biggest and most important freestyle and Greco Roman tournament in the United States for high school athletes. It is the national championship for 16U and Junior divisions and where the best in the country go to prove themselves. If you place or win there you have beaten elite nationally ranked competition. Fargo also plays a major role in recruiting as college coaches pay close attention to results and it is considered a legacy tournament that follows wrestlers throughout their careers

Freestyle and Greco Roman are not separate from folkstyle they are a major advantage. These styles force wrestlers into positions that folkstyle does not always emphasize helping improve body control positioning and awareness of scoring situations. Exposure points teach discipline and mat awareness while Greco Roman builds upper body strength hand fighting and control in ties leading to better snaps and confidence in close matches. Freestyle encourages offense creativity and pace helping wrestlers open up their attacks and become more dangerous overall

Competing at the national level also builds mental toughness. Wrestlers are pushed outside their comfort zone against the best competition in the country which prepares them for high pressure moments and makes the folkstyle season feel more manageable

Beyond individual development one of the most valuable parts of this experience is competing at National Duals. Wrestling for Team Maryland is different than wrestling for yourself. It is about representing your state competing alongside your teammates and battling for a common goal. The team camaraderie built through training, traveling, and competing together creates a bond that lasts far beyond the tournament. Wrestlers learn how to support each other handle adversity as a team and take pride in something bigger than themselves

The bottom line? Freestyle and Greco Roman styles provide unmatched opportunities for growth and exposure while sharpening skills that directly translate to folkstyle success. When combined with the experience of competing in National Duals and major events like Kids Nationals, Fargo, and the Women’s National Championships, wrestlers come back more skilled, more confident, and more connected to their team ready to compete at a higher level in every season.
